When looking at a clear, sparkling gemstone, it is almost impossible for the untrained eye to determine exactly what it is. To the naked eye, a cubic zirconia (CZ), a moissanite, a lab-grown diamond, and a natural diamond can look remarkably similar.

However, beneath the surface, these stones possess vastly different chemical properties, durability levels, and optical performances.

Understanding how these gemstones differ in light refraction, weight, and composition is the best way to separate lookalikes from real diamonds. Here is a definitive guide on how to tell them apart, what to look for, and why expert vetting matters.

1. Cubic Zirconia (CZ): The Budget Alternative

Cubic zirconia is a completely synthetic material made from zirconium dioxide. It is entirely man-made and possesses no diamond carbon structure.

  • The Tell-Tale Sign: CZ lacks the structural hardness of a diamond. Over time, it scratches easily, absorbs skin oils, and takes on a cloudy, dull appearance.
  • The Light Test: While diamonds reflect a balance of bright white brilliance and sharp rainbow flashes, a CZ acts like a prism, throwing off exaggerated, colorful rainbow sparkles that look unnatural under direct sunlight.

2. Moissanite: The Rainbow Sparkler

Moissanite is a gemstone composed of silicon carbide. While incredibly rare in nature, almost all moissanite used in jewelry today is created in a laboratory.

  • The Light Test (Double Refraction): Moissanite is “doubly refractive.” When light enters the stone, it splits into two separate rays.
